What Is CEREC Technology and How Does It Work?
When you break or fracture a tooth, it can be incredibly painful. Getting in to see your dentist ASAP becomes your top priority. Often, our doctors will determine that the best way to correct your problem is to place a crown over your broken tooth. At Redondo Beach Dental Group, we use CEREC dental crowns whenever possible. There are many advantages to this latest technology, and in this blog, we will discuss why our doctors prefer CEREC technology over traditional crowns.
What Is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restorations Of Esthetic Ceramic. This new technology is state of the art and is more efficient than the methods traditionally used for dental crowns. One big perk is that Redondo Beach residents can avoid multiple visits to our doctors to have their crown placed. CEREC dental crowns are done in-office during one appointment. By creating the crowns chairside, the need for a lab is removed, saving patients time, money and pain. In addition, CEREC technology can be used for more than just crowns. Our doctors are able to use this technology for partial crowns and veneers as well as other dental work.
The CEREC Process
If our doctors determine you qualify for a CEREC dental crown, they will use CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) to create a 3D impression of your tooth. Using this technology allows for the most accurate picture of your tooth from which to create the “cast.” Most Redondo Beach men and women love the fact that they are able to avoid the nasty, sticky molding gel they may have had to endure in the past.
Once our doctors have prepared your existing tooth to place the new crown, they will take another virtual look at your tooth to ensure all measurements are optimal. CEREC dental crowns are milled in-office inside a machine called a milling unit and are created with hard, stable ceramic. The milling process is very quick and only takes a few minutes. While you’re waiting, you can even enjoy a nice massage in our massage chair!
After your new crown has been created, our doctors will check it for color and fit accuracy, and if any changes are needed, they will be able to do them immediately. This ensures our Redondo Beach patients leave our office with a perfectly matched CEREC dental crown. Once you and they are satisfied with the results, our doctors will polish the crown and place it in your mouth. The entire visit only takes about two hours! Now isn’t that so much better than the multiple visits of years past?
