The Cold Laser treatment is a new laser treatment modality here at Redondo Beach Dental Group.  In contrary to our surgical laser systems, the cold laser beam does not create any heat.  This laser falls into the category of "Therapeutic Lasers".  This type of laser is utilized in applications such as:

  • Accelerated tissue healing after periodontal surgery
  • TMJ pain treatment
  • Accelerated healing after extractions
  • Acclerated integration of dental implants
  • Accelerated bone remodeling and healing after bone grafting
  • Rapid Orthodontics - faster tooth movement in conjunction with the INVISALIGNTM system
  • Treatment of tooth sensitivities
  • Treatment of ulcerations

Cold Laser treatment is painless and usually lasts only a few minutes.  Cold Laser treatment can not cause any damage and has no adverse or side effects, so it is perfectly safeto use.

The Cold Laser is a therapeutic laser by classification, but is also often referred to as a biostimulatory laser.  This seems to be the more appropriate name, since it illustrates the laser's mechanism of action more precisely.  The Cold Laser "stimulates" cells on several levels by virtue of transferring photon energy into the individual cells.

This photon energy is then utilized to produce more of the cells own fuel molecules (ATP).  With more energy avialable, the cell will initiate a faster cell division cycle, as well as a more rapid cell differentiation cascade.  The actions which happen on a molecular level translate into faster healing and tissue remodeling on a clinical level.

This laser can be utilized in many different applications across multiple diciplines in dentistry: Orthodontics, Implant Dentistry, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Endodontics and of course General Dentistry.

TMJ pain and/or dysfunction is on of the more commonly seen ailments in dentistry.  Its origin is often traced to an improper bite, stress or anatomical anomaly.  Although the laser therapy can not cure the cause of the pain of dysfunction, it can help with the discomfort stemming from it. Most patients report a dramatic improvement of comfort level after only one or two treatment sessions.
Since the laser action has an accelerating effect on the bone remodeling process, this can ultimately be used to increase the speed of orthodontic movement.  Although this can be used for conventional orthodontics, as shown on the left, we use it predominantely with the INVISALIGNTM system.  Since this is a computer-guided method of moving teeth, this  system allows for more precise control over the timing between the aligner exchanges (please refer to our INVISALIGN page for more information on this nearly invisible method of moving teeth).
Additionally, cold laser therapy has an amazing effect on the overall healing response after oral surgical procedures.  Healing after extractions and bone graft procedures can be greatly improved and accelerated and integration time of dental implants into bone can be reduced dramatically.  Moreover, tissue healing after periodontal surgery is also greatly improved.
